“You don’t miss it till it’s gone” is a common idiom that expresses the idea that people often, but not always, take things for granted until they are no longer present. It highlights the tendency to overlook the value of something, or someone, until its absence makes it apparent. This phrase is often used when reflecting on the loss of a loved one, the end of a relationship, or the disappearance of a cherished possession or opportunity.
Although Dale and Crystal didn’t take Dingo’s arrival, or his presence in their home for granted, the void in their hearts was more than they could endure.
Dingo was found dumped in the front yard one morning. Dingo had a broken leg. It was suspected that he had been run over by a vehicle and given his Chihuahua breed and his 12.5# body weight, he was lucky to survive. The family took him to the vet and paid for the initial core vaccines and casting of his leg. The vet recommended an orthopedic surgeon at an estimated cost of $1800.00. The family was unable to pull together those funds and turned Dingo over to rescue. Terri Morse, a foster momma for AHFK, picked Dingo up from the family and took him to our WV Vet, Dr. Gragg. The leg was healing, and a new cast was placed on Dingo. Dingo was to stay in boarding until a foster could pick him up on Monday and transport could take him to MN the following weekend. An update was given to the family. Crystal and the kids were devastated that Dingo was gone… “could we get him back?”
Today, after his doctor’s appointment, Dingo went back home. Home to the family that loved and cared for him after finding him, immobile in their front yard. Dingo was so excited to be back with this family that he thrashed around and nearly removed the cast. They are once again, re-casting it this afternoon.
It’s not always about taking people, life, things, furbabies for granted while we have them, it’s about the pain and loss felt when they are no longer present in our lives.
Thank you, Dale and Crystal and kids, for opening your hearts and home to Dingo. Thank you for giving him the family that he so richly deserves and loves. We are furever grateful.
