When Dave and I began Almost Home Foster & Rescue, we had stated that we would always try to help those furbabies that were “located in our own backyard.” We had been tagging, pulling, and saving so many dogs from the Southern states, “trying to save them all,” a feat that we quickly learned, is not possible, but when we were approached and asked to help those in Minnesota, or bordering states, we couldn’t, and wouldn’t, “Just say ‘NO’!”
Rusty, along with, Dollie, Trixie, Lillie, Walter, Mollie Jr, Punkin and Opal, proved to be one of those times. Located just a few miles from us, breeding had gone awry. The original pups were not altered. Then a number of major surgeries took place with one partner, unable to work, the family dynamics fell apart, money was tight, and the puppers were pregnant. The breeding got out of control and we were sought out to help.
Rusty was in the second group of pups to arrive at Almost Home Foster MN License #132328. Rusty, along with his brother Walter, had a little different Breeding background. Momma is a Shih Tzu/Poodle mix and his Poppa is a Chihuahua/Dachshund mix. Rusty took on the “look” of his Poppa, a Chihuahua/Dachshund mix, but with his momma’s longer hair…he has a striking, “good looking dog” persona. However, Rusty’s trust of people was slow to come around. We played the catch-me-if-you-can game nightly. Once securely resting in one’s arms, he was quick to relax and just enjoy the cuddles.
Erin and Dave are no strangers to rescue dogs and their antics, fears, and actions. Once Erin held little in her arms, he knew that he was safe. A quiet home with a large, well secured yard is exactly what this boy needs. I still wonder whether Rusty’s feet have touched the ground however…Erin was quite content with this little furbaby close to her heart.
Thank you, Dave and Erin, for giving Rusty the incredible family and home that he so deserves. Thank you for opening your hearts and home to him. We are furever grateful.
