Recently, we have taken in many Cavapoos because of an area breeder closing his doors. We have placed everyone of them without issue or problem, except Jewels. Jewels began her life in an Amish puppy mill with little or no human socialization or even adequate socialization with other dogs. It appears that she was kept caged nearly all day, every day. She was later purchased by another breeder whose practices and standards are quite different from those of her previous owner, however, unable to continue his business, he released Jewels to Almost Home Foster & Rescue.
Jewels took her time in learning to trust humans. She was able to play in a large yard with several other dogs by day, and at night, she would come into the home and kennel up for the evening. About a month into the socialization process she began to trust and approach us. We thought that she would be ready for her furever family. We found, however, that a family with children brought out an intense amount of anxiety and she would hide from the kids.
The perfect family did come along and Jewels, although apprehensive with change and the new routine and schedule, and with different people once again introduced into her life, is working through her anxiety and learning to let her guard and barriers down. Jewels’ new family has a stay-at-home dad, a momma that works very part-time, and two adult human, twin-sisters who are biting at the bit to meet her. She will be traveling to Arizona in a couple of weeks where she will winter for the season, and meet her sisters who are college bound there. Oh, Lucky Dog!!
Thank you, Judy and Kevin, for opening your heart and home to Jewels. Thank you for giving her the time, compassion, and patience that she needs to adjust and acclimate to her new family life. Thank you for being her family.
