Copper came to be through backyard breeding. Momma Beagle gave birth to more pups than the breeders could sell and there was the threat of dumping them. Why Not? They were now considered an expense and the longer they held onto them, the more their profits from the previous sales would dwindle, so for little to nothing they were sold to an elderly couple that “just didn’t want to see them put down or put in the shelter.”
Copper lived with his new family for a couple of months. They hadn’t realized just how much energy a Beagle puppy had, how fast they moved and that their brains were in their nose and their ears are for decorative purposes only. The couple each had knee and hip replacements and the threat of being tripped up by a puppy on the move was all too real. They called Rhonda Gower and asked for help. Rhonda reached out to Almost Home Foster & Rescue of MN.
Meg and Peter had visited an outside restaurant where groups of people enjoyed each other’s company and their furry, dog companions were welcomed. It was here that Meg and Peter met Gus & Gertie, two AHFK Alumni. It was here that they heard about AHFK Rescue. Meg and Peter had previously had a Beagle, from 8 weeks old until well into his Senior years. They were now ready to open their hearts and home to another. They had contacted AHFK when Bit-O-Honey came into rescue, but she already had a family in place. A couple of days later we were to learn that Copper would be joining the AHFK family, and they were excited to meet him.
This past weekend Copper made the trip to the Metro area of Minnesota where he was welcomed by his new family and made himself completely at home. He laid himself out in his new momma’s lap after collecting all his new toys and meticulously placed them in his new bed.
Both Meg and Peter are journalists. Meg worked for Minnesota Public Radio (MPR) for 10 years and Peter currently covers the MPR sports. So, when listening, and one hears, “And, I’m Peter Cox” be sure to note the lift in his voice because Copper “is home.”
Thank you, Peter and Meg, for opening your hearts and home to Copper. Thank you for giving him the home and family that he deserves.
Heart Hugs always.
