Piper Scores Another Chance at the Perfect Furever Home and Family – Piper is Wonderful!

Piper originally came to Almost Home Foster & Rescue by way of North Carolina.  Foster Momma Donna Williams pulled this little Chocolate Beagle, fostered her and had the initial vetting done, readying her for transport to Minnesota.  Unfortunately, this little, one-eyed, a genetic disability,  Piper-girl tested heartworm positive.  The initial treatment was started and Piper arrived in MN.  She was quickly adopted after her treatment was complete.  4.5 years later, the family experienced some financial difficulties when the business that they both worked for closed its doors and moved out of state.  Their new jobs kept Piper confined to a crate far too many hours, and she was then returned to rescue so she could find a home where she could once again be a “real Beagle.”

We brought Piper up to date on vaccines, 4DX testing, had a dental cleaning scheduled and once again, posted her as adoption ready.  Kandy and Lonnie, previous AHFK adopters of two, were recovering from the loss of one, Seti.  Seti’s death left Percy, in a frump.  Seti was her littler mate sister and her mentor for the past 10 years and Percy, the submissive of the two was lost.  That is when Kandy and Lonnie reached out to AHFK and scheduled a meet and greet with Piper.

On a previous occasion, Piper proved to be ultra dominant with another female.  Resource guarding of both food and human became apparent and we thought best to promote Piper as a one dog only, female dog reactive.  Man, did she prove us wrong.

“Within an hour of you leaving both dogs were sharing the same doggy bed. Piper likes the crate and uses (I think) to center herself, before she decides to explore. Around 3 p.m. I gave the dogs a treat. Very small piece of pup-a-ronie. There were no issues. I gave one piece to Percy and used her name, then I gave one piece to Piper using her name. And I repeated this many times.

Around 6pm I was going to get dinner for the dogs. But before I got up, Piper came to find me, climbed on my bed and started to lick my hand. So, I went upstairs and fixed both dogs’ dinner. They ate in the same room but were about 8 feet apart. No issues.”

Kandy and Lonnie, once again, thank you for opening your hearts and home to another AHFK Beagle.  Thank you for giving them the time, love, compassion, and space that they need to adjust and thrive.  Heath Hugs!
