You Know When You Know…Henry Chooses His Family

He stood on the porch, his arms ladened with packages.  AMAZON packing tape adorned the tops of each package. The AMAZON logo matched that of his courier’s uniform.

“Okay to put these here?” he asked as he indicated to the table located right outside the front door.

“Yes, that would be great,” I responded.

He held the clipboard, tightly, noting on his roster sheet that he had completed the delivery.  His lips were pursed, his shoulders tight, his chest and chin thrust forward.  Without looking at me he asked, “So, you run a rescue, or what?”

“Yes, rescue,” I responded.

A huge sigh escaped his lips, his shoulders slacked, he smiled, and his eyes danced.  “I knew it.”  But one could tell that he was relieved to hear it.

We talked a bit about the history of Almost Home Foster & Rescue, how we started, our numbers, where the dogs came from, about anything and everything.  He told me of his dogs at home, all rescue per se, traumas that some had endured, heartaches and achievements.  We swapped stories.  As he started to leave, he said, “Me, I like the littles.”

Well, did I have littles to show him…and I led him to the quarantine building where 5 Chiweenies were safely housed until they were fully vaccinated.  They averaged 4# in weight and were just three months of age.  Troy, the Amazon courier, melted.  “Oh, my wife would kill me if I came home with another.”

I informed him that they would not be ready for “Foster-to-Adopt” until mid-September when they had completed their vaccinations.  Great conversation, but Troy needed to finish his route.

The following morning, I received an email through the almosthomefoster.com website.  “Hi, my name is Debbi.  My husband, the Amazon delivery guy, was at your house last night.  Can we come and see the Chiweenies on Friday?”  I laughed out loud.

Troy and Debbi arrived on Saturday, as we arranged.  Debbi already knew that she wanted Louie, Troy was smitten with Mazie.  This was either going to be a battle, or what I did not know.  They asked for a hold on Louie, pending their application.  Troy mentioned Henry, our little 2-year-old Chihuahua from Oklahoma.  I brought Henry out to the yard to meet Troy and Debbi…that’s all she wrote folks.  Henry picked Troy.  The application was completed and processed.

This past Friday, Henry made his way home.  Right out of the car, Henry made a beeline for Troy.  This was his dad, and nobody was going to say anything different.

Thank you, Troy and Debbi, for opening your hearts and home to Henry.  Thank you for giving him the life that he truly deserves.  Not only does he have amazing pet parents, but he has grandchildren that live right across the road and oodles of fur-siblings to keep him healthy and happy.

Look to see this family again in September when little Louie gets to go home.
