Saved from a Life of Backyard Breeding, Ravioli Found her Furever Home and Family, and They’re Perfect!

Beaver, WV, located in Raleigh County, is a small, declining community with a median household income ranging between $28,229 and $30,870, and a poverty rate of approximately 14.5%–16.6%. The area, with a population under 500, has a cost of living roughly 19% below the national average but faces challenges from a shrinking, aging population and a high rate of population decline.
The intent of this post is not to shame or demean those who live in work in this area, but to drawn attention to the fact that many in this area find ways to supplement their income; backyard breeding is one.
Almost Home Foster & Rescue of MN Foster Momma Kayla Dillow, while en route to the grocery store passed the common area park where these breeders set up their crates and kennels full of momma dog’s latest litter in an attempt to supplement their income, and then start all over again with breeding their already over-bred dog. One, lone Mini-Australian Shepherd occupied the kennel; the last one to be sold before its owner could pack up and go home.
Kayla stopped and inquired about the pup. She was the last one, all the others had been sold. As they were conversing, a male approached. He was interested. This little Aussie would throw some beautiful pups, “could make him some money.” Kayla didn’t hesitate, she took the dog. She contacted AHFR and asked if we had room. “No, but we’ll make it.”
I was looking at Ravioli’s picture when a coworker stopped by my “cube-farm” work cubicle. Julie fell in love. “Let me talk to Steve.” And that’s all it took.
Ravioli finished her vetting earlier this week, and last night she made her way, just a hop, skip and a jump to her furever home and family. Ravie has a family now, complete with a German Shepherd sister Rea, and a cat, which we could figure out who was more afraid of the other.
Julie and Steve sent photos last night and Ravioli was settling in quite nicely. She was HOME. Thank you, Julie and Steve for opening your hearts and home to this baby girl. And, welcome to the AHFR family.
